Let’s talk about the different engine noises below and what causes them.
A grinding noise coming from the engine can be caused by poor oil circulation. Poor oil circulation can be caused by a clogged oil filter. If you continue to drive your vehicle, you run the risk of damaging the engine beyond repair. Another thing that may make a grinding sound is a faulty water pump.
If the noise that is coming from the engine is hissing, your vehicle may have a leaking vacuum hose. We can replace the vacuum hose to stop the noise and restore the engine’s performance. You may also hear hissing or a sound that sounds more like sizzling if you’ve got a fluid leak in the engine.
If the engine is knocking, you likely have a detonation problem in the cylinders. This can be caused if you put fuel with a lower octane rating in the tank than what your vehicle requires. The engine will also knock if the rod bearings are worn and the rods are making contact with the cylinder walls.
Popping noises generally come from the exhaust system. The popping can also sound like tapping. If you hear these noises when you first fire up your automobile, you likely have a leaking exhaust manifold underneath the hood. The catalytic converter may also pop if it is clogged.
Speaking of the catalytic converter, a missing catalytic converter will also cause your engine to rumble. In fact, your engine will roar quite loudly when you press down on the accelerator. The engine can also rumble or pop if you need to replace the muffler because it is damaged or has a hole in it.
Finally, there are a couple of different things that might make your engine squeal. The first thing is a loose accessory belt that needs to be tightened. We can do that here at our shop. You may also hear a squealing noise coming from the engine if the power steering pump is malfunctioning.
